Free native Irish trees for Galway schools

PRIMARY schools in Galway are invited to plant one of the 2,000 free Scots Pine saplings to mark National Tree Day on Thursday, October 1.

An initiative of the Tree Council of Ireland, it encourages primary school children across County Galway to plant a tree and discover the important role trees and forests play in our everyday lives.

The theme for this year ‘Planting for the Planet’ will help children explore the various roles trees play in supporting wildlife and biodiversity as well as providing resources for our use.

Glennon Brothers, a timber processing business in Ireland, is offering 2,000 free Scots Pine Saplings, a native tree species in Ireland, for free.

There are also online classroom resources, nature activities and information about the Scots Pine to help teachers bring National Tree Day to life in the classroom and outdoors.

“National Tree Day is about turning learning into action,” said Felicity Gaffney, President of the Tree Council of Ireland.

“Through “Planting for the Planet”, we want children to explore the many ways trees support our environment, from providing habitats for wildlife to capturing carbon,” she added.
