Contracts signed for new social housing in Athenry

MORE than 40 new social homes will be delivered in Athenry at the start of year 2028.

Located only a kilometre from Athenry town centre, the new development at Gort Mhaoilir will provide 43 housing units, including universally designed units.

It will also include new roads, footpaths, car and cycle parking, landscaping, public lighting, signage and associated infrastructure.

Construction is due to begin in the coming weeks, with the development expected to be completed in early 2028. C&N Higgings Construction has been appointed as contractor for the development.

Cathaoirleach of Galway County Council Cllr Andrew Reddington said the project would make an important contribution to housing provision in Athenry.

“The Council has a responsibility to provide high-quality housing in communities where there is a clear need, and this development will make a significant contribution to that work,” added Cllr Reddington.

Chief Executive of Galway County Council Liam Conneally said that the project was part of the council’s continuing programme of housing delivery across the county.

He also highlighted that the council has a strong pipeline of housing projects at various stages of delivery.

The new development follows the commencement of construction on a separate €4.7 million Galway County Council project at Cullairbaun in Athenry. That project will provide 12 social homes and a purpose-built community care home.
