Over €3.5million secured for Tuam regeneration project

Transformation of The Shambes is a ‘gamechanger’

FUNDING of €3.6 million has been announced this morning for the major redevelopment of The Shambles car park in Tuam town centre.

The public car park will undergo a significant transformation to accommodate a new covered outdoor market and community events space. It will allow for year-round events and festivals and is predicted to significantly increase footfall in the area while greatly improving the streetscape.

Planning permission for the significant project was approved two years ago and it has now secured funding under the new Towns and Cities Regeneration Investment Fund.

Welcoming the announcement, Minister Seán Canney said: “The €3.6 million allocation for the Shambles Outdoor Market and Event Space is a very significant investment in the heart of Tuam and will support the development of an important town-centre space for markets, events and the wider community.”

Tuam Municipal District Councillors have been hugely supportive of the planned development describing it as a “gamechanger” for the town and one which has the potential to spearhead further regeneration of the town centre.

Meanwhile, a further €150,000 has been secured for the multi-million euro re-development of the old railway station building in Tuam. This project has already secured major regeneration funding in a previous round.
