Rory Gaffney retires after 17-year career
TUAM man Rory Gaffney has this morning announced his retirement from professional soccer, following a glittering 17-year career.
Gaffney spent the last six seasons at Shamrock Rovers, where he became a key player for the Hoops, scoring 50 goals across the league, FAI Cup and Europe and winning the SSE Airtricity League Player of the Year in 2022.
His career also saw him play six seasons in the UK (2014-2020) with the likes of Bristol Rovers and Salford City, where he helped both clubs earn promotions to League One and League Two respectively.
The 36-year-old helped Shamrock Rovers secure five league titles in 2020, '21, '22, '23 and '25, scoring 37 league goals in 143 appearances, but could be best remembered by their fans for his heroics in last year’s FAI Cup final.
Rory’s brace of goals helped secure the Dubliners their first league and cup double since 1987, in a tie where the offside flag denied him a hattrick.
He would make just one more appearance for the club, against Hamrun Spartans of Malta in the Europa Conference League last December, with an injury to his Achilles keeping him out of contention in 2026.
“I want to take a moment to say thank you to everyone at Shamrock Rovers as I announce my retirement,” Rory told shamrockrovers.ie.
“Being part of this dressing room since 2020 has been a true highlight of my career. From the domestic successes to the European nights under the lights at Tallaght, I'm incredibly grateful for having the privilege to wear the jersey.
“Thank you to the club, the staff, and my teammates for being able to play a part in such a successful era which I hope will continue.”
Rory began his League of Ireland career with Mervue United in 2009 before a spell with Limerick FC between 2011 and 2014, where he won the First Division title in 2012.
His time in Limerick earned him a move to the UK, where he played with Cambridge United, Bristol Rovers, Salford City and Walsall (on loan) before returning to Ireland to join Shamrock Rovers.
The striker is among the six highest scoring Rovers players in the league since their current home Tallaght Stadium was opened in 2009. Only Graham Burke, Gary Twigg, Aaron Greene, Ronan Finn and Gary McCabe have bagged more leagues goals than the former St. Jarlath's College student.
Rory also scored a vital goal for Rovers away to Shkupi in the second leg of the UEFA Europa League third qualifying round tie, a win which ultimately secured group stage football for the club in the 2022 UEFA Europa Conference League.
Across 17 years spent in the League of Ireland, alongside stints in League One, League Two and the National League in England, Rory bagged 137 goals across 559 appearances for seven clubs.
Gaffney also scored eight European goals for the Hoops, leaving him fifth in the all-time list of League of Ireland goalscorers in European competitions.
