Kilbannon Road upgrade works close to completion

IMPROVEMENT works on the R332 Kilbannon Road are expected to finish almost six weeks ahead of schedule and be nearly complete by the end of September.

The long-awaited €4million project began earlier this year in the Kilbannon village area and the road has now been reopened to two-way traffic, restoring normal traffic movement in the area, following the completion of a significant phase of construction works. A 50kmh speed limit will remain in operation on the stretch of the R332 where the works are being carried out.

Tuam District Councillor Donagh Killilea told The Tuam Herald that the works would be almost finished come the end of September.

The project includes the realignment and widening of a 1.5km stretch of the R332 through Kilbannon village to Kilconly GAA grounds, a shared cycle-track and footpath linking St. Benin’s National School to Kilconly GAA grounds and a controlled pedestrian and cyclist crossing.

A minor realignment of local roads L2210 and L6486 at the crossroads in Kilbannon village is also included in the project, as well as a sustainable drainage system and improved road safety measures. The tender for the works was awarded to Jons Civil Engineering Company Limited.

“It is a great relief for people travelling on the route every day. We also need to thank them for their patience and support towards it,” commented Cllr Killilea.

“The contractor is expecting the works to be completed almost four to six weeks ahead of the schedule, and would nearly be completed by the end of September."

While the road is open to two-way traffic, the works on the R322 will continue over the coming months.Galway County Council have advised motorists to exercise caution while travelling through the area and to remain alert to traffic management measures, construction activity and any temporary restrictions that may be in place.
