Site needed for Claregalway to have chance of getting a bottle bank

IDENTIFYING a site would be the first step to setting up a bottle bank in Claregalway, a meeting of Athenry-Oranmore MDC heard last week.

Local Cllr David Collins told the meeting that bottle and recycling banks are required in the area to cater for its a rapidly increasing population of 1,600 people. He said currently there isn't any such facility in the nearby area.

He asked if a private land needs to be identified to start the process or whether council-owned land can be used to facilitate the services.

“Because of the increase in population, we really need to look at this, where people can walk to recycle what they need to in their own area,” he added.

Senior Engineer at Galway County Council Sean Whelan pointed out that getting a site for the bottle banks in Claregalway is the biggest challenge. He said the service can be established only if a suitable site is identified.
