Limerick reclaim Liam MacCarthy with dominant 11-point win over Galway

After three years away, Limerick have scaled hurling's summit once more after an awesome display in out and out of possession put paid to Galway's hopes of capturing Liam MacCarthy for a sixth time.

The Treaty County met Galway's running game head on and feasted on turnovers. Diarmaid Byrnes, Kyle Hayes, Cian Lynch, Adam English and Gearóid Hegarty, despite not scoring for a second match running, were all outstanding. Cathal O'Neill top scored with 1-4, while Peter Casey and Aaron Gillane picked off four points apiece.

Galway trailed by 0-13 to 0-8 at half-time. That they remained in touch was largely down to a pair of magnificent early saves from Darach Fahy that denied Hegarty.

Aaron Niland's accuracy from placed balls accounted for six of Galway's tally by then, Jason Rabbitte causing all manner of problems and drawing fouls for four of them. Worryingly for the underdogs, Niland and Rabbitte shot their only points from play while Gillane and Byrnes topped the charts for a more fluid and prolific Limerick.

Armed with a healthy but not insurmountable lead, the Shannonsiders took decisive steps towards a 13th title with a dominant start to the second half. The opening nine minutes yielded 1-6 - Cathal O'Neill taking Gillane's pass before drilling their 43rd minute goal - with just two points coming by way of reply for the Tribesmen.

Galway had Ronan Glennon dismissed on a straight red card after catching Peter Casey with a high challenge in the 57th minute. By then, however, the die had already been cast with Limerick in total control and in possession of a 1-21 to 0-14 buffer.

Their lead inflated to a high of 14 points late on before Conor Cooney blasted a 76th minute penalty past Nickie Quaid that ranked as no more than a consolation for the outclassed and outmuscled Leinster champions.

That's six All-Irelands for Limerick in their ten seasons under manager John Kiely, coach Paul Kinnerk and renowned psychologist Caroline Currid. They've swept the boards with National League, Munster and All-Ireland titles in 2026 after watching Clare and Tipperary enjoy success in the interim.

A year of progress and provincial silverware ends in crushing disappointment for Galway.
