Film documents Galway Student Union life
A DOCUMENTARY created by the Students’ Union at University of Galway will have a world premiere at Galway Film Fleadh.
Directed and produced by Gerard Conway, Mark Byrne and Rob Dennis, ‘The SU’ offers unprecedented access to the lives of Students’ Union officers as they organise protests, campaign for change, support their fellow students and grow into their roles as leaders.
Filmed over two years, it captures not only the challenges they face, but also the friendships, humour and energy of student life in Galway.
For decades the Students’ Union at the University of Galway has produced some of Ireland’s leading political figures, including former President Michael D. Higgins.
Throughout its history, generations of student leaders have found themselves at the centre of campaigns that reach far beyond campus - from contraception to abortion, from the Troubles in Northern Ireland to war in the Middle East.
“This documentary shows how our Students’ Union Officers develop the skills and values that shape them into future leaders,” said Seán de Búrca, Students’ Union President.
“It’s an inspiring story about getting involved and believing you can make a difference,” he added.
