New burial plots planned for Tuam convent grounds
A PLANNED extension to the existing cemetery at the Sisters of Mercy Convent grounds in Tuam will cater for 35 new burial plots.
The Sisters of Mercy Western Branch have applied to Galway County Council for the extension of the cemetery, which is a protected structure that dates back to 1851. The first Sisters of Mercy nuns came to Tuam in 1846.
The cemetery is located in Townparks Third Division in Tuam, adjacent to the Cathedral of the Assumption. Gates and railings at the Sisters of Mercy Convent grounds will be relocated to allow for the cemetery extension.
A row of trees will also be removed and other associated groundworks are set to be carried out if planning is approved.
County Council planners are due to make a decision on the planning application in early August. The cemetery was previously extended in 2017.
