Local heritage groups attend national network event

MEMBERS of heritage groups in Milltown, Killererin, Moylough, Skehana and Claregalway and elsewhere in the county represented Galway at a recent national gathering.

Broadcaster John Creedon was the special guest at the annual Irish Community Archive Network (iCAN) held at the Great National Ballykisteen Hotel in Co Tipperary.

County Galway was represented by a total of nine heritage groups.

The Milltown Heritage Group, Killererin Heritage Society, Moylough Heritage Society, Skehana and District Group, and Claregalway Historical and Cultural Society were joined by the Woodlawn Heritage Group, Abbey and District Heritage Group, Moycullen Heritage Society and Oughterard Heritage Group.

Marie Mannion, the Heritage Officer with Galway County Council, was also in attendance.

iCAN helps community groups to digitise and share the local history of their area through online archives.

It has supported groups to create and develop 55 online archives in Galway, Mayo, Sligo, Clare, Tipperary, Cork and Wicklow and is developing eight more with groups in Carlow and Limerick.

iCAN is an initiative from the Heritage Council and the National Museum of Ireland and is delivered in partnership with Heritage Officers in local authorities.
