COUNCILLOR Mary Hoade was this week named as the new Cathaoirleach of the Tuam Municipal District.

The Caherlistrane woman was proposed by her Fianna Fáil colleague Donagh Killilea and seconded by outgoing Cathaoirleach Karey McHugh Farag during Monday’s AGM.

She is one of the county’s longest serving councillors, having first won her seat in 1999. It is her second time in the position, having last been elected as Cathaoirleach of the Tuam MD in 2019.

“I want to thank Donagh and Karey for their proposals, I’m delighted to do the role. This is the second time I’ve gotten this opportunity and the first time I will wear these chains,” stated Cllr Hoade during the meeting.

“I plan to be a fair, open and transparent Chair, who will work for the whole district, as we represent people from such a vast area.”

Cllr Hoade had been Leas Cathaoirleach for the Tuam MD, a position which will now be filled by Cllr Killilea, after he was nominated by Cllrs Hoade and McHugh Farag.

Director Of Services for the Tuam MD Michael Owens paid tribute to both the outgoing Chair, who is set to begin her maternity leave next month, alongside the new Chair, who he expects to fill her shoes with dedicated service.

“I want to commend the outgoing Chair for her huge dedication to the role over the past year. Cllr McHugh Farag served the district well, running meetings with efficiency, balance and fairness, both to staff and councillors. I wish you and your family well,” commented Mr Owens.

“I also want to wish Cllr Hoade well as she takes on this office for a second time. I’m sure she will bring the same dedication she brought during her time spent as Leas Cathaoirleach of both the MD and the county over the past 12 months.”
