Young Tuam woman to feature in RTÉ drama

A YOUNG woman from Tuam living with an intellectual disability is set to make an appearance in an upcoming RTÉ drama.

Clara Roarty was born with Angelman Syndrome, meaning she is non-verbal and needs 24/7 support. However, that didn’t stop her from getting involved in the world of TV and she is set to feature in the RTÉ crime drama The Yank as a background extra.

The opportunity came through West Coast Casting, whose team provided inclusive and supportive facilitation to ensure her experience on set was both accessible and rewarding.

Her participation marks a significant moment, reflecting both Clara's determination and the growing inclusivity within Ireland’s screen industry.

“This experience has meant so much to Clara. She is always scanning TV and Youtube videos for people and places she recognises and now she gets to be that person,” stated her proud mother, Sarah Roarty.

“The support and understanding shown by West Coast Casting made it possible for Clara to fully take part and enjoy every moment.”

The Yank, starring Kate Mulgrew and Colm Meaney, is one of RTÉ’s major new drama productions, and Clara’s involvement highlights the importance of representation and opportunity for people of all abilities in the arts.

West Coast Casting has been commended for their commitment to inclusive casting practices, helping to open doors for individuals who are often underrepresented in the media.

“Clara was an absolute pleasure to work with on The Yank and we were delighted to be able to help her achieve her dream of working on a production in the west of Ireland. We very much look forward to working with her on the next production,” commented Casting Director David Kennedy.
