Athenry Arts & Heritage Centre celebrates 25 years
Free family Medieval Experience
THE Athenry Arts & Heritage Centre is celebrating a major milestone as it marks its 25th anniversary as one of Galway’s leading heritage attractions and community social enterprises.
To commemorate this special occasion, the centre is inviting families, visitors and the wider community to join a free Family Medieval Experience on Sunday June 7 from 10am–4:30pm. It promises to be a fun-filled day of history, culture and interactive family entertainment in the heart of one of Ireland’s best-preserved medieval towns.
Since opening its doors, more than 150,000 visitors have discovered medieval Athenry through its fun interactive guided tours. Visitors have included domestic and international tourists, primary and secondary school students, international education groups, special needs organisations, senior groups and tour operators from Ireland and overseas.
Over the past 25 years, the Athenry Arts & Heritage Centre has become far more than a visitor attraction. As a successful social enterprise and for the last 20 years supported by Pobal as a Community Services Programme, the centre has played a significant role in heritage education, tourism development, employment creation and community engagement.
The centre's manager Alan Burgess said: "This anniversary is an opportunity to celebrate not only the history of the centre itself but also the people and partnerships that have sustained it. We are proud of what has been achieved over twenty-five years and delighted to invite families and the wider community to celebrate with us."
As part of the anniversary celebrations, the Free Family Medieval Experience will transport visitors back in time, offering an exciting opportunity to experience Athenry’s medieval past in an engaging and family-friendly setting.
Visitors can enjoy dressing up in medieval costumes, taking part in interactive tours and trying their hand at archery which is suitable for all ages to enjoy. The event promises a unique celebration of the heritage, traditions and stories that have made Athenry one of Ireland’s most historic destinations.
The anniversary celebrations will also recognise the many staff, volunteers, supporters and community partners who have contributed to the centre’s success over the past quarter century.
Everyone is welcome to attend this free community celebration. While admission is free, advance booking is essential as there’s limited capacity per hour.
