Public consultation for future use of Toghermore campus in Tuam
A FEASIBILITY study is set to highlight the options for the future use of Toghermore House and its surrounding land in Tuam.
The HSE has appointed a consultant to carry out the study on all HSE-owned properties in the Tuam area, after a tender was sought in February. The study will also include a formal public consultation with health operators and community organisations, including the LGFA, GAA, athletics clubs and other interested groups.
Study will commence in June
Councillor Donagh Killilea has confirmed that the study will commence in mid-June and may take around 12 weeks to complete.
“I have been to the forefront in the promotion of a new health campus in Tuam and especially, the protection and future use of the Toghermore campus when it was mooted for closure back in 2017,” said Cllr Killilea.
The space at Toghermore House is currently used to deliver national counselling services, mental health services, quality and risk, pediatric outpatient services, as well as HR and administration support.
One of the buildings has also been made available temporarily to the Office of Public Works (OPW) for the use of the Office of the Director of Authorised Intervention, Tuam (ODAIT), the agency overseeing the excavation works at the former Mother and Baby institution in Tuam.
Cllr Killilea noted the potential installation of a regional equine therapy unit at Toghermore will be a central consideration within the review.
The National Equine Assisted Therapy Centre proposed by the Child Vision charity has been in consideration for over two years.
Rescued from ashes
“It is amazing how the Toghermore campus was rescued from the ashes a few years ago and now we are about to have extended services in that space,” added Cllr Killilea.
The feasibility study will assess current and potential community health uses across the HSE Tuam estate, aligning future planning with clinical needs, community priorities, and sustainable site development. It will look to strengthen Tuam’s health infrastructure and secure a community-focused future for the Toghermore campus.
With the study set to start in mid-June, the consultation dates and further details including meeting schedules and submission channels will be published by the HSE in the coming weeks.
