North Galway plays part in Garda history book launch

A NEW bilingual book detailing the history of An Garda Síochána in Galway was launched last Wednesday.

The Garda North Western Region Headquarters in Galway city was the venue for the launch of Duty: Aspects of the History of An Garda Síochána in Galway or Dualgas: Gnéithe de Stair an Gharda Síochána in nGaillimh as Gaeilge.

The book contains 43 chapters and examines aspects of An Garda Síochána in Galway city and county since the force was founded in 1922. It combines personal stories with historical records and community perspectives.

There are contributions from Tom Gilmore, formerly of The Tuam Herald; Mary Burke from Tuam; and retired Gardaí including Jim Cuddy, who is also a former Galway County Councillor.

The book was co-edited by Superintendent Damien Flanagan and Marie Mannion, Heritage Officer with the County Council. Clíona Richardson, the Assistant Garda Commissioner for the North Western Region, was on hand to carry out the launch last week.

“It is a reflection not only of local policing history, but of the social and cultural fabric of Galway through the lens of the Garda service,” said Gerry Roche, the Chief Superintendent of the Galway Garda Division.

The book was funded by the commemoration unit of the Department of Culture, Communications and Sport. It is available at the Garda North Western Region Headquarters and can be downloaded from An Garda Síochána’s website.
