Slevin goal helps Galway to Connacht triumph
LADIES FOOTBALL CONNACHT SENIOR CHAMPIONSHIP FINAL
GALWAY 1-11
MAYO 0-11
At Páirc Seán MacDiarmada
GALWAY retained their Connacht Ladies Football title in Carrick-on-Shannon against their nearest rivals Mayo.
A Kate Slevin goal early in the second half gave Daniel Moynihan’s side a 1-10 to 0-3 lead and allowed them to stave off a Mayo fightback that saw them score eight of the remaining nine points.
Every kick Leanne Coen had at goal was on target. The Corofin forward scored three of Galway’s opening four points. Galway were 0-5 to 0-1 to the good at the end of the first quarter, with Eva Noone also pointing twice.
Galway extended their lead coming up the break via points from Coen, Lynsey Noone and a brace from Slevin.
Slevin continued her scoring streak in the new half. She got her third point from the throw-in, and her goal came in minute 32 through a deflection. Mayo hit the next six points on the spin, with full-forward Sinead Walsh bagging four scores.
Coen put Galway 1-11 to 0-9 in front in minute 48. Mayo sub Clodagh Keane had a goal ruled out for a square ball minutes later, and despite further points from Walsh and Hannah Reape – who was given a red card following the final whistle – Galway saw out the victory.
