Galway schools in contention for Ireland’s Fittest School title
SCHOOLS in Tuam, Caltra and Ballygar are set to feature in the Connacht Final of the Ireland’s Fittest School Competition. Ballinderry NS, Caltra NS and Scoil Mhuire Gan Smál in Ballygar will compete to represent the West at an event in The Hub Castlerea, Roscommon, in early May.
The winning school progresses to the national final in Athlone on May 23, alongside the Munster, Leinster and Ulster champions. Supported by fruit importer Fyffes, the event promotes the importance of exercise, fitness and healthy eating amongst young people.
The Galway schools will have to fend off the challenge of Roscommon’s Croghan NS in Boyle, who also made it to the provincial decider. The national final will be hosted by Irish Olympian sprinter David Gillick.
The prize for the winning school will include €8,000 worth of sports equipment.
