Galway company heads up €15m Shannon Airport upgrade work
GALWAY-headquartered OCC Construction, whose Managing Director Peter O’Connell is from Killererin, has started work on the €15 million arrivals area upgrade at Shannon Airport
The significant retrofit project will modernise key areas of the terminal building while delivering major sustainability improvements. Works include the replacement of the existing 1970s façade with a new high-performance curved architectural envelope, enabling the transition to electric heat pump technology and new energy-efficient HVAC systems.
The project will also see a complete upgrade of the immigration and baggage halls, creating brighter, more contemporary spaces for arriving passengers, alongside improved layouts designed to enhance passenger flow and reduce queuing.
OCC Construction, which employs 55 people across its Galway-based operations, has grown steadily in recent years. The appointment to Shannon Airport represents a significant milestone for the company as it continues to strengthen its presence in large-scale regional infrastructure. The company is also pleased to be delivering another project in collaboration with O’Neill O’Malley Architects and Tobin, both Galway-based design practices, highlighting the strength of professional expertise across the region.
Peter O’Connell, Managing Director of OCC Construction, said: “This is a landmark infrastructure project for the region and one we are extremely proud to be delivering. As a Galway company, contributing to the continued development of Shannon Airport — one of the West of Ireland’s most important gateways — is particularly significant for us.”
Construction has now commenced, with completion scheduled for May 2027.
