Over €63 million allocated for Co Galway road projects
Projects in Claregalway, Abbeyknockmoy and Athenry
FUNDING of €63 million has been allocated to Galway County Council for a range of national, regional and local roads’ projects in the county.
Included in the national roads and strategic projects is €1,850,000 for the N17 Milltown- Gortnagunnad Realignment scheme; €2,500,000 for pavements works on the N83 in Claregalway and €1,500,000 for traffic calming in Claregalway.
The N63 Liss–Abbeyknockmoy Realignment scheme has been awarded €1,000,000 while the N84 Clonboo Pedestrian Crossing and Junction Improvements will receive €103,500.
Minister of State at the Department of Transport Galway East TD Sean Canney says the investment will ensure communities are better connected and protected while also supporting economic activity across the region.
He also noted that €4.5 million has been allocated in 2026 for the Galway City Bypass project, under the New Roads programme, reflecting its importance as a strategic national infrastructure project for the wider Galway region.
The long-awaited R332 Kilbannon Road Upgrade and Realignment has been awarded €2,500,000 while €2,000,000 is allocated for the Athenry Relief Road.
Safety improvement funding for Galway East includes:
L3107 Monivea Road, Athenry – traffic calming (€75,000)
R360 Peak Hill, Dunmore – visibility splays, linemarking & signage (€50,000)
L2123 Corofin – linemarking, speed-activated signage & traffic calming (€50,000)
R362/L2317 Creggs (at the rugby facility) – traffic calming (€35,000)
R347 Cemetery Cross, Athenry – footpath & lighting (€30,000)
R328 Dunmore (at the T-junction with the N83)– advanced warning signage & speed ramps (€20,000)
