Renewed attempts for town centre residential project
A FRESH attempt is being made to secure planning permission for a residential development in Tuam town centre.
In 2023 Galway County Council refused permission for 11 units on a site off Bishop Street. Now the owner, Michael Cummins, has submitted a new application in the hope of developing the overgrown and derelict site.
An application has been lodged for three terraced houses and eight apartments for the site on Bishop Street, which is on the opposite side of the road to the St Vincent de Paul building.
Three, three-bed terraced houses with private gardens, are proposed to front onto Bishop Street while eight apartments — a mix of one-bed and two-bed units — are earmarked for the rear of the site. Permission is also sought to demolish an existing derelict building on the site.
There are also plans for car and bicycle parking and bin storage space.
An architectural design report submitted with the planning application states that it is located within Tuam’s Architectural Conservation Area.
The County Council is considering the application and won't make a decision until the end of March.
