Galway’s Town Hall Theatre marks 30 years

THE building housing Galway’s Town Hall Theatre has had many uses over the past 200 years — a courthouse, a dance venue, a town hall and even a boxing arena. This weekend its life as the heart of the arts in Galway reaches its 30th anniversary.

The major refurbishment of the Town Hall Theatre was officially opened by then Minister for the Arts, Culture and the Gaeltacht, and Galway West TD, Michael D Higgins on February 1, 1996. Little did anyone attending on that day contemplate that he would go on to serve as President of Ireland for two terms.

The theatre has only had two managers in its lifetime — the late Mike Diskin from Salthill, who sadly passed away from cancer in 2012 aged just 49, and Tuam’s Fergal McGrath.

Fergal lives in Galway but remains proud of his Tuam roots and attests that The Tuam Herald and its Country Music columnist Tom Gilmore steered him towards life in music and the arts.
