‘The core of everything in this group is Kate Moran’
SEMPLE Stadium, Thurles was the field of dreams for all connected to Athenry camogie on Saturday evening after their thrilling 0-14 to 0-12 All-Ireland Senior Club Championship final replay victory over St. Finbarr's of Cork.
Afterwards, Herald Sport heard the views of several players in the winning camp — Sabina Rabbitte and team captain Dervla Higgins who were among a cohort to win All-Ireland senior titles with club and county in the same season; a legend of Galway camogie in Therese Donohue; key defenders in Lisa Casserly and dual star Kate Screene; plus two of the younger members of the team in teenagers Sinéad Feeney and player of the match Clodagh Burke.
SABINA RABBITTE
ON HONOURING KATE MORAN'S LEGACY
It was actually one of the most emotional games at the final whistle. It just hits home that we're missing one our key players from over the years. It was very emotional for all of us. You could hear it there in Dervla's [Higgins] speech.
There last week, we were talking about our whys. Therese [Donohue] was talking about our whys. Everyone has a different why. But the core of everything in this group is Kate Moran. Even the way she played, her whole character.
I think we just try to just bring that along with us as we go through the years. Thank God, we got there in the end. A lot of what was today was for her.
