Rovers’ hero returns to grassroots

Big investment in facility

THE new full-size 3G astro turf pitch at Tuam Celtic AFC will provide extra training space for the club’s 20 teams and alleviate the pressure on games being cancelled due to bad weather at this time of the year.

The new pitch was officially opened on Saturday evening, and it is a project that has cost close to €750,000 to complete.

Shamrocks Rovers player Rory Gaffney, who played underage soccer for Tuam Celtic, was on hand alongside Junior Minister and Galway East TD Sean Canney for the official opening, which attracted approximately 100 people to Tuam Celtic’s grounds in Cloonthue.

“We received approval for the (Sports Capital) grant application about 14 months ago. We put in for planning in May, and broke ground in July, so there was no hanging around,” said Mike Togher, the Chairman of Tuam Celtic.

The new pitch has floodlights, CCTV cameras, and a 3.5metre high perimeter fence surrounding it.
