Investment to progress re-opening of Tuam railway
Number of transport projects in West included
ENABLING works to progress the re-opening of the disused railway line between Athenry and Claremorris is expected begin soon.
That’s according to Junior Transport Minister and Galway East TD Seán Canney who was commenting on the inclusion of the route as a priority project in the revised National Development Plan announced this afternoon (Wednesday).
The Claregalway bypass, Athenry Inner Relief Road and Galway City Ring Road proposals have also been included. The schemes have long been regarded as essential to tackling congestion, improving safety, and supporting housing growth across the wider Galway region.
The railway line through Tuam has been closed since 1976. It is listed under projects in excess of €200m, identified for urgent commencement of construction. The project does not require planning as the line is already in place.
“The Western Rail Corridor is now firmly established as a targeted priority in this plan,” Minister Canney said. “This is the outcome of consistent, detailed work to ensure the West is fully represented. The project is scheduled for delivery by 2030, and enabling works can commence shortly.”
He said that consideration was also being given to double-tracking between Athenry and Galway.
The re-opening of the Western Rail Corridor was a key recommendation of the All-Island Strategic Rail Review. It identified the Athenry–Claremorris link as a transformative rail investment for the West, supporting passenger services, freight potential and regional development.
Minister Canney said the publication of the plan represents “a clear, strategic shift” towards delivering major transport investments for the West.
“The Western Rail Corridor is prioritised, scheduled and ready to progress. The work continues but the foundations are now in place, and the West is firmly on the map.”
