Tuam couple share their ‘home dream’ on TV show

Estimated build cost doubled

A TUAM couple who saved around €250,000 by building their own home will feature on RTE’s Build Your Own Home show this evening (Wednesday).

Louis Brennan and Aoife NicChraith have built a modern three-bedroom house as an extension to their 200-year-old one-bed cottage near Caherlistrane with the help of Australian eco builder and broadcaster Harrison Gardner.

After having planning permission approved, the couple received a quote of around €550,000 from builders, which was way out of their budget.

“When we designed the house the build estimate was set at only €250,000 but it took us two years to get the planning permission and in that time the build cost went up to €550,000, without including any internal works,” stated Aoife.

“A friend of mine then told me about the course he took at The Common Knowledge Centre founded by Harrison and also informed us that they are looking for someone to appear on the show,” said Louis.

Louis and Aoife then decided to apply for the show and got selected.
