LateVarley strike saves Cortoon
ADRIAN VARLEY created one goal and scored another as Cortoon Shamrocks battled back from five points down inside the closing ten minutes to rescue a draw against Micheál Breathnach on Sunday afternoon in Athenry.
The serious business in Intermediate Football Championship Group 1 had already concluded ahead of the final round. Table toppers St. Brendan's claimed the sole automatic quarter-final place on offer, while bottom-placed Oranmore-Maree made a shock early exit. Cortoon Shamrocks and Micheál Breathnach were safely through to the last 12 with just the order of second and third to be decided in atrocious weather conditions.
Two Adrian Varley points and one apiece from Alex Fitzpatrick, Damien Boyle and Luke Dempsey (free) gave Cortoon a 0-5 to 0-4 lead at the end of a slow burning first half. Liam Mac Donnacha, Maidhc Mac Gearailt, Cillian Ó Curraoin (free) and Fiontán Ó Curraoin were on target for Micheál Breathnach.
