Desperation driving scams and extortionate rents

STUDENTS in Galway are forced to pay extortionate rents or defer their college place as desperation grows to secure accommodation ahead of the start of the new academic year.

Universities and student bodies are reaching out to homeowners and landlords in a bid to convince them to open their doors for the thousands of students attending third level courses in the city.

Maisie Hall, Students’ Union President at University of Galway told The Tuam Herald that the number of emails being received by them and the university’s accommodation office is overwhelming.

“We have students commuting for up to seven hours a day, paying extortionate rent, sleeping on friends’ couches or living in hostels. All of which are not ideal conditions for them to study, live and work.
