From elephants to seaweed — a life and skincare journey

IT’S been an indirect and bumpy, winding road into the skincare world for the founder of Kinvara skincare Dr Joanne Reilly.

As thousands of young people get set to receive their Leaving Certificate results around the city and county this week, Joanne’s experience and career path show that the path you choose doesn’t have to be the one you stay on.

Joanne had no intention of starting a business or developing skincare products. She has a PHD in Elephants which you might dismiss as irrelevant for skincare but as she points out with a smile, elephants and rhinos are both pachyderms, meaning they have thick skin.

Her elephants’ expertise didn’t lead her to developing the range of skincare products that are much loved by thousands of customers throughout Ireland. However, she does believe that her PHD has been very helpful in that it provided a great foundation in terms of skills. “It gave me structure and confidence and the belief that I could do things on my own,” Joanne explains.
