Levelling the playing field
A NEW initiative running in Dunmore has opened the world of soccer, sport and new friendships to young children with disabilities
‘IT’S breathtaking really. She’s beaming”. These are the words of a delighted mother who was watching her daughter laugh and smile as she took her first steps across a soccer pitch.
Ten-year-old Juliet Lynch lives in Tuam. The recent Open Day was her first visit to the Football for All sessions in Dunmore and one which her mum Olwen Daly is adamant they will be returning to on a regular basis.
“This is our first time, and we’ll come every week now,” remarks Olwen who was hugely impressed by what the free sessions offer. “It’s just amazing.”
Football for All has been running on Saturday mornings at Dunmore MacHales astropitch since March. Although the initiative is funded through the FAI and led by Dunmore soccer club, Dunmore Town AFC, it’s very much a coming together of both sporting communities with the aim of playing sports and exercise more accessible and enjoyable for all young people in the area.
