Galway style reigns at Ladies Day

Tuam milliner creates Best Hat

A GALWAY woman has taken the coveted accolade of Best Dressed at Ladies Day at the Galway Races while a Tuam creative is the talent behind the headpiece that scooped Best Hat.

Megan Cunniss from Newcastle in the city wowed the judges with her elegant black and white ensemble. The sophisticated look of a tailored, sleeveless white dress with black edging, which Megan had specially made, teamed with a wide brimmed matching hat from Millinery By Mairéad in Newry, saw her walk away with the €10,000 prize sponsored by Irish beauty brand Ella & Jo.

An elated Tuam milliner Michelle Kearns told The Tuam Herald that she was thrilled to have one of her creations win the Best Hat title – her first big win in Galway.

Michelle, whose pieces have been worn by many celebrities in Ireland and abroad, designed and handmade the striking blue structured headpiece with feathers that was worn by Breda Butler from Thurles in Co Tipperary.

Breda was among the finalists at last year’s Ladies Day in Galway when she also wore a piece designed by Michelle and said she was somewhat taken aback but absolutely delighted to have won Best Hat today (Thursday).
