Lidl to open new Claregalway store next week

LIDL is set to mark the opening of its 100th solar powered store in Ireland with the launch of a brand-new store in Claregalway next week.

The store is due to open its doors on Thursday, May 22 at 8am bringing the retailer’s total store count to 11 in Co Galway and creating 30 new jobs for the local area.

Representing an investment of €7 million, the Lidl Claregalway store is located on a newly developed greenfield site in the centre of the village.

The store will feature state-of-the-art facilities including a spacious shop floor with wide aisles, self-service check outs, long tills, an off licence and an in-store bakery offering fresh baked goods daily.

Earlier this year, Lidl Ireland confirmed a fresh €600 million investment into creating 35 new stores and a Regional Distribution Centre at Little Island in County Cork over the next five years.

As part of its ambitions to reduce operational emissions and its overarching sustainability strategy ‘Better Tomorrow’, Lidl has been leading on rolling out solar PV panels across its network over the last number of years.

So, far Lidl has already invested more than €12 million on solar panels.

Lidl Claregalway will be the retailer’s 100th store to feature a solar PV system that will generate more than 20 per cent of the building’s energy requirements.

The store will also incorporate a range of additional sustainability features including LED lighting with Dali control, high performance building fabric, heat recovery and electric vehicle charger spaces for customers.

Local ladies’ Gaelic football player and Lidl Ambassador Nicola Ward will cut the ribbon on the morning and welcome shoppers into the new store.

Staff at Lidl’s Claregalway store will donate €1,000 in Lidl vouchers to Anam Croí and Claregalway National School on the morning of the opening.

The first ten shoppers to enter will be first in line to pick up opening day discounts but also receive complementary Lidl gift vouchers to put towards their in-store shop.
