Dr Andrew Murphy received the HRB Impact Award 2025.

Donegal’s loss is Turlough’s gain in pioneering GP

“Moving to Turloughmore was one of the best decisions I made.”

So says award winning doctor, Andrew Murphy, a native of Co. Donegal who has been living and working in Turloughmore for the last 28 years.

He believes that his experiences during his training years in Dublin emphasised to him the social determinants of health and the fact that people’s social circumstances have a huge impact on their health.

“Coming to Galway I had the opportunity to decide what type of practice I wanted to join and Turloughmore certainly worked out very well.

“One of the proudest days that we had here was when COVID came, and we had our first vaccination clinic organised chronologically. To see the goodwill that is amongst patients towards healthcare was really touching and it’s a memory that will remain with me forever.

“Patients have been really welcoming here, along with my colleagues. They also have been supportive of the research that I do and have got involved in many of the trials.”

Along with being a General Practitioner, Dr. Murphy is also involved in teaching and research work at University of Galway.
