New Council homes planned for Tuam

Old Fire Station site earmarked for development

GALWAY County Council plans to construct new homes on the site of the old fire station in Tuam town centre.

The local authority has received approval to proceed with the design of the homes earmarked for the brownfield site on High Street.

A planning application for the development is expected to be lodged this summer with the aim of seeking tenders for construction before the end of the year. Work is hoped to begin in 2025.

Director of Housing with the Council Michael Owens told The Tuam Herald that the first stage for the Tuam project will involve ten new social homes - a mix of apartments and bungalows. The final number of new homes and the mix will be determined in the design process, explained Mr Owens.

Mr Owens said the units will provide high-quality homes for families and individuals and will help breathe new life into the local community.

“The redevelopment of the site will provide much needed new social homes and make a positive contribution to Tuam town centre,” said Mr Owens.

Tuam’s Fire Station relocated to its purpose-built home on the Milltown Road several years ago. There had been interest in the old building on High Street for use as a community arts space, but the Council indicated last year that it wanted to explore its use for housing.
