Deposit Return Scheme comes under fire at MDC

THE new Deposit Return Scheme, where a surcharge of 25 cent was imposed on plastic bottles and tin cans, has been branded ‘farcical’ by members of Ballinasloe Municipal District Council.

Launched throughout the country earlier this month, the subject of the scheme was raised at last week’s MDC meeting, where Cllr Tim Broderick said rural communities were being left out of the Re Turn scheme due to the fact that small businesses couldn’t afford to install the reverse vending machines required to give refunds to customers.

He has called on the government to provide funding to Galway County Council so that the machines can be provided to allow equal access to the scheme.

“These machines cost €20,000, which is beyond most small businesses and it’s absolutely farcical to insist on bottles and cans being recycled in this way when most people already have blue recycling bins,” he said...
