Plans submitted for ‘landmark’ outdoor market in Tuam centre

MAJOR redevelopment plans that will transform The Shambles carpark in Tuam’s town centre into a vibrant outdoor market and event space have been submitted for planning.

The proposal has the potential to drive a significant increase in footfall while also significantly enhancing an “unattractive area” in the town centre.

The reconfiguration of the Council carpark will retain 21 spaces while bringing new life and a new look to the current “enormous expanse of tarmac”. Up to 22 market stalls could be accommodated on designated market days while the canopy structures would also provide shelter for the 21 parking spaces being retained.

The concept of a permanent and sheltered home for a market in Tuam, as well as outdoor event spaces, were recommendations in the Tuam Regeneration Masterplan adopted a few years ago.

If the planning application gets the go ahead, Galway County Council intend to apply to the government’s Rural Regeneration Development Fund for the substantial monies needed for the project.

A main feature of the development will be a central pedestrian corridor with the mono-pitch canopies above. The canopies will be planted with green roofs to soak up the rainwater and to support the Council’s biodiversity objectives. Many of the canopies will also incorporate solar panels for use of renewable energy on the site…
