Local businesses report healthy trade over Christmas period

THE staff at Padraic’s Discount Store in Tuam were given the day off work yesterday (Tuesday).

A sign on the front door of the popular shop informed passers-by on Shop Street that staff members had been rewarded with a day off due to the “very busy” footfall experienced by the store over the Christmas period.

A few paces down the street, Tuam’s sole independent butcher, Gerry Mullins, reported a strong trade in the days leading up to Christmas Day. “It was very busy in the shop. We closed on the Saturday (December 23) before the Christmas. It shows the trust people have in shopping local for their meat,” said Gerry.

While some supermarkets in the local area decided to close their doors for New Year’s Day, Howley’s Eurospar in Dunmore was just shut for Christmas Day and St Stephen’s Day.
