Galway Sports Stars award winners for 2023 announced

THE achievements of Galway's top performing sports men and women over the past calendar year will be celebrated at the Galway Sports Stars Awards later this month.

Ballybrit-based Medtronic, one of the world’s most successful Medtech companies, continue as sponsors of the prestigious annual event that has been in existence since 1965 and honours sporting excellence in the county.

A total of 23 award winners - chosen by a panel of journalists from Raidió na Gaeltachta, the Connacht Tribune and The Tuam Herald - will be celebrated at a gala banquet in the Galway Bay Hotel on Friday January 19. Special guest on the night will be former National Hunt champion jockey Barry Geraghty.

Fresh from completing a three in-a-row of All-Ireland club titles when outclassing Waterford’s Ballymacarbry, the all-conquering Kilkerrin-Clonberne ladies’ footballers will collect three awards - including Team of the Year.

Willie Ward is named Manager of the Year and his daughter Nicola, a star performer for club and county throughout 2023, is chosen as the Ladies Football recipient.

Corofin’s 22nd Galway title came carrying the underdog’s tag. Central to that success was the performances of Gaelic Football winner Gary Sice, who claimed a 13th county medal just three days shy of his 39th birthday…
