Tuam players still hooked after 50 years

THERE aren’t many clubs that can boast they have players who have been playing for 50 years. But many members of Tuam 73 Bridge Club who gather every Wednesday night attest that they simply can’t get enough of it!

Card playing is at the heart of many communities around the county and has been a much-loved hobby and social outing for hundreds of people.

In the early 1970s playing the card game Bridge was hugely popular for all ages and it led to the formation of a new club in Tuam which simply named itself after the year it was founded — 1973.

Lena Lowry has been playing for some 30 years and smiles as she recalls her first big win just eight months after she started. “I won the President’s Prize. It was great. My playing went downhill after that,” joked Lena.

Another long-time member is Julie Stapleton from Vicar Street in Tuam. She couldn’t say exactly when she took up playing Bridge but that she has been with the club for about 45 years or so now…
