Major fundraising drive gets underway

A MAJOR fundraising campaign to help build a new spectators’ stand at Brownsgrove community pitch was launched by Cortoon Shamrocks GAA club at the weekend.

A large crowd gathered at the Cortoon Inn for the event which was officially kickstarted by newly appointed Galway Under 20 Gaelic football manager and local clubman Derek Savage.

The old stand that was built in the 1980s had to be demolished on health and safety grounds during the installation of new floodlighting at the pitch.

Chairperson of the fundraising committee Johanna Kelly told how the old stand was built by the community, especially young people who were part of a Youth Employment Scheme at the time. She hoped that the new facility would again be built-up with the help of the community and urged everyone to support the campaign.

A target of €80,000 has been set for the stand development along with two dugouts, fencing and associated works. Significant work has already been undertaken on the stand thanks to a huge voluntary contribution of labour and time from local tradesmen and contractors…
