Athenry Walled Towns Day part of National Heritage Week celebrations

AS EVENTS continue around the county to mark National Heritage Week, one of Ireland’s most historic towns, Athenry, hosted its own unforgettable journey through the medieval ages.

On a rare afternoon of seasonal sunshine, an estimated crowd of 7,500 people flowed through the medieval town, enjoying the various activities and displays held inside and outside its famous castle.

From old style bread and butter making to sword play, from the beating of drums and the sounds of ancient harps to the skill of the Gliondar stilt walkers, there was something for every age group at Athenry Walled Towns Day…
