Emily follows in her parents’ footsteps

National prize a dream come true for bright young Tuam artist

WINNING the Texaco Art competition has been a life-long dream for young Tuam artist Emily Acheson, aged just eight.

The pupil at Gaelscoil Iarfhlatha has scooped first prize in the 7-8 category of the prestigious competition, a competition Emily isn’t shy about saying she, while only eight years of age, has spent half her life trying to win!

Emily’s impressive colour-filled self-portrait was created by the avid artist using pencils and acrylic paint. Adjudicator Professor Gary Granville said Emily’s painting was “a work that captures a sense of the person behind the paint”.

Emily is certainly following the family tradition as her mum and dad, Jennifer Cunningham and Timothy Acheson, are an artist and a sculptor. Emily is surrounded by art and paint and loves experimenting in her mother’s studio in their home on Gilmartin Road…
