Finding better balance as we climb in years

TUAM’S Evelyn Flynn was in disbelief when she found herself on the ground after a fall about 18 months ago. Being active and independent, it was the last thing she expected.

While Evelyn didn’t suffer a serious injury, it certainly knocked her confidence and impacted her mobility. However, now Evelyn has got her mojo back and is walking better than ever. Having completed two courses of an exercise and education programme, this cheerful and sprightly woman has set her goal of getting her dancing shoes back on!

The risk of falling increases with age and, according to the HSE, one in three older people fall every year and two-thirds of them fall again within six months.

Keeping active and taking regular exercise is one of the top pieces of advice in terms of how to prevent a fall as it increases a person’s strength, balance and coordination...
