Heads to COPE

Exhibition starts conversation in community about domestic abuse

IT’S important that women know there is a safe space where they can tell their story of abuse and be believed.

That was the message shared by Donna Murphy, Outreach Worker in North Galway with COPE, Galway’s Women’s Domestic Abuse Service, at the opening of an exhibition commissioned by COPE, which visited Tuam library for the past week.

The powerful pieces of sculpture in ‘We See, We Hear You’ feature six large women’s heads – all faces inspired by the stories of Galway women who have experienced domestic violence and abuse.

Each head was linked to an audio recording of individual women’s stories. Artist Maura Finnegan wanted to sculpt faces from a diverse age and cultural demographic that were representative of society in the city and county.

An empty box sat poignantly beside the heads – a reminder of how many women and children have lost their lives through domestic abuse…
