Funding sought to restore Kilbannon’s historic nunnery

Site represents important eras in Irish history over last 1,000 years

EFFORTS to restore a historic nunnery in Kilbannon are gathering pace as the local community seeks official funding for the project.

The Kilcreevanty Graveyard Committee is in the process of applying for Community Monument funding that would allow the overgrown graveyard on the site, which has become inaccessible, to be returned to its rightful glory.

Known locally as the Casta Silva (chaste wood) Nunnery, the site is of huge historical significance and the community is hopeful the Heritage Council will fund its restoration.
