From drizzly Dunmore to the Arctic Circle

Martina’s challenge will raise funds for Sightsavers Ireland

A DUNMORE woman will be among a small group of Irish people who will experience the first sun rise in the Arctic Circle in 2023.

Martina Parker departs early tomorrow (Thursday) morning for Oslo, for what could be a journey of a lifetime – an expedition to the Arctic Circle to witness its first light of the New Year. The mother of four is embarking on the chilly challenge to help raise funds for Sightsavers Ireland.

Martina only decided to commit to the trip last October but has successfully exceeded her fundraising target of €5,000. A key part of that was the auction of a Dunmore MacHale jersey signed by the squad and management, which managed to bring in €1,300.

Her daily walks have helped with her training, but her family will be interested to see how she manages the freezing conditions. “I’m always the cold creature in the house, up beside the fire all of the time. They were laughing when I told them where I was going,” Martina told The Tuam Herald…
