Streetscape scheme suffers financial shortfall

Department rejects request for extra funds to brighten up Tuam’s streets

GOVERNMENT has failed to give the extra funds asked for by Galway County Council to meet the huge interest shown in a scheme aimed at brightening and revitalising Tuam’s town streets.

While several local public representatives were eager to welcome recent funding of €100,000 for the Streetscape project in Tuam under the Town and Village Renewal Scheme – this funding had previously been allocated.

The Council had in fact sought an additional €70,000, which would allow it to extend the grant aid to more property owners and businesses along more streets of the town.

The total funding sought from the applications submitted was almost double the amount that was initially allocated by the Department of Community and Rural Development.

There is disappointment within the local authority that their application for €170,000 funds has been rejected and that only the original €100,000 will be forthcoming…
