May brightens up the winter

WALKING, cycling or driving on the Galway Road in Tuam over the past few days, you might be stopped in your tracks to admire the colourful and cheerful winter wonderland that lights up the area year after year.

Local Christmas enthusiast May Gibsey continues to dazzle onlookers with the thousands of euros worth of outdoor lighting and decorations in front of her home.

May has spent years accumulating Christmas lights, with some of those on display costing up to €500 – though she now usually focuses on buying new additions to her collection in the January sales.

A sizeable crowd arrived outside May’s front gate last Saturday night for the annual switching on of the display, which was set up by her brother and nephew, Pat and Colm O’Neill, in the days and weeks leading up…
