St Brigid’s history-makers have a special Bond

Reunion for heroes of ’95 and ’96 this Saturday

EVERY so often, there is a bit of banter – which sometimes can escalate into debate – around Loughrea and the surrounding villages about which was the better senior colleges hurling team in the mid-1990s: St Brigid’s or St Raphael’s.

Both claimed All-Ireland senior titles in their respective competitions in 1995, with St Brigid’s winning their first national vocational schools crown and St Raphael’s securing a coveted Croke Cup, a feat not equalled before or since by any Galway school.

Coincidentally, both schools won those All-Irelands within 24 hours of each other on the May Bank Holiday weekend and there were remarkable scenes in Loughrea over Sunday and Monday as the town hosted two significant homecomings.

For St Brigid’s heroes of ’95 and ’96 – for the school won its second consecutive All-Ireland the following year – the memories of this golden era are sure to be replayed when the players, management and their families come together for a celebration at St Brigid’s College this Saturday...
