Carer Sarah Ann’s sisterly love

Pres Tuam student named Connacht Young Carer of the Year

PROUD mother Anna Buday has expressed delight at her daughter Sarah Ann winning the Netwatch Connacht Young Carer of the Year award, but she said her 13-year-old has always been of a caring disposition.

Sarah Ann received the prestigious accolade at a national awards ceremony held in The Westin Hotel, Dublin, last Thursday, with the event hosted by RTE broadcaster Miriam O’Callaghan.

The teenager was presented with the award for going above and beyond for her young siblings and, in particular, her 15-month-old sister Esther, who has Trisomy21 (Down syndrome) and AVSD, a heart defect in which there are holes between the chambers of the right and left sides of the heart.

Sarah was thrilled when Esther was born, as she had longed for a sister, and she plays with Esther every day, helps with her speech and language therapy exercises, and also helps her younger brothers with their homework and getting ready for bed...
