A grave concern

New Claregalway cemetery soon to go to public consultation

PROGRESS is finally being made on a long sought-after cemetery in Claregalway, with Galway County Council officials saying the earmarked site is ready to advance to the next stage of the planning process.

Due to a lack of cemetery space in Claregalway, deceased residents of the area currently can’t be buried in their own parish, it was heard.

Cllr Jim Cuddy told a recent meeting of the Athenry-Oranmore Municipal District that he was aware of a number of funerals where a person had to be buried elsewhere and he was fielding queries “on a daily basis” regarding when a new graveyard would be available for use.

“It was 2008 when the council were first notified of this. Galway County Council need to take full blame on this, I make no apology about that,” said Cllr Cuddy…
